Collaboration with Steven Michael Quezada

Working with SMQ was an invigorating experience that fostered an open exchange of ideas. Our partnership began with in-depth discussions about his vision for the show, where we explored themes, color palettes, and set aesthetics that resonated with his comedic style. Understanding the significance of creating a welcoming and engaging atmosphere for both the audience and guests was central to our design approach.

Throughout the design phase, we held collaborative brainstorming sessions that integrated SMQ’s feedback with our technical expertise. This synergy allowed us to create an innovative set that encapsulated the essence of a late-night talk show while being adaptable to different guest appearances and segment formats. The overall goal was to establish an inviting yet dynamic backdrop that reflected SMQ’s personality and connected with the audience in Albuquerque and beyond.

Stage Design and Construction Details

The stage design for "After After Party" was conceived with flexibility and functionality at its core. Here are the critical components and considerations that guided our approach:

1. Modular Set Design:

- The stage was designed with modular elements to facilitate quick changes between segments. This included interchangeable backdrops that could highlight various themes based on the guests or topics discussed, allowing for a fresh visual experience in each episode.

2. Fabrication Process:    - Using durable materials that could withstand the rigors of live television, we crafted the set elements with an eye for both aesthetics and practicality. This involved a mix of lightweight frame construction, scenic painting, and textural detailing that enhanced the visual depth of the stage.

3. Scenic Painting:    - A significant part of our design included custom scenic painting that visually represented the cultural fabric of Albuquerque. By incorporating local art and motifs, we aimed to create a sense of pride and connection to the community while establishing the stage as a unique landmark for the series.

4. Technological Integration:    - Incorporating advanced lighting designs was crucial for setting the mood and ensuring optimal camera visibility. We worked closely with the lighting team to install strategically placed lighting fixtures that highlighted key areas of the set, allowing for dynamic shifts in ambiance throughout each episode.

Maintenance and Operations

Maintaining the set over the first couple of seasons involved a dedicated team that ensured the quality and functionality of the stage elements. Regular inspections were conducted to assess wear and tear, and our build team swiftly addressed any repairs or updates needed to keep the set in peak condition. Our collaborative relationship with SMQ and his crew extended into maintenance, where we provided ongoing support and adaptation to the set as the production evolved. The workflow focused on efficient communication, allowing us to respond promptly to any last-minute adjustments or needs based on changing production schedules.

Conclusion

The design and build of the "After After Party with Steven Michael Quezada" stage was a remarkable project that exemplified the power of collaboration between a production designer and the creative vision of a host like SMQ. From conceptual discussions to the final touches, this project allowed us to create an engaging and vibrant platform that reflected both the spirit of the show and the culture of Albuquerque.
